At the College of St. Joseph, we are committed to providing a quality education at a reasonable cost. CSJ is in fact one of the most affordable private Catholic colleges in New England. We believe that no student should be denied a college education because of lack of financial resources, and we work hard to meet the individual needs of our students and their families through our extensive financial aid programs.

Financial Aid Information and Instructions
The College is genuinely concerned that the cost of higher education is a serious financial investment for many students and their families. We have established a program of financial aid designed so qualified students interested in attending the College may be able to do so. We encourage all candidates for admission or returning students to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Applications may be submitted after January 1st.  Apply early to have the best chance of receiving aid.  Priority deadline is March 1st to be considered for all funding.  Late applicants will receive notice of eligibility for any aid remaining at the time their application is received.  Aid is determined by the financial aid office.

Financial Aid Application Process
Financial aid applicants should complete and submit the following forms after January 1 and before March 1. Apply early as funds are awarded on a first come, first serve basis.
  1. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. Apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The College of St. Joseph's Title 4 school code is #003685. A PIN (Personal Identification Number) is needed to electronically sign the FAFSA. Go to www.pin.edu.gov to get your PIN. If parental information is required on the application a parent will need to request a PIN as well to sign the application.
  2. Complete the College of St. Joseph Financial Aid Application. Financial Aid Application. (Acrobat reader required)

  3. Apply for state scholarship/ grants. Contact your state agency for specific requirements and deadlines.  Vermont residents can apply at www.vsac.org.

Financial Aid Eligibility

To be eligible for assistance under the federal financial aid programs you must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Be a US citizen or eligible non-citizen of the United States with a valid Social Security number
  • Be enrolled in a degree program or accepted for admission to the College of St. Joseph.
  • Meet satisfactory academic progress standards once in school.
  • Register with the Selective Service, if required and
  • Not be in default on a federal student loan or owe money on a federal student grant

Recipients are selected by CSJ’s scholarship committee.  Many are based on financial need and academic performance.  Must have a FAFSA on file.  Refer to College Catalog for more details.

Federal Grants

-Pell, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG), Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG).   

Federal Parent Loan-For parent of dependent student enrolled in an undergraduate program.  PLUS loan, 8.5% fixed interest, repayment starts 60 days after the second disbursement.

Student Loans

Perkins-Guaranteed student loan-meaning no credit review required, based on need.  Interest rate is fixed.  Repayment begins nine months after recipient ceases to be enrolled.

Stafford- Guaranteed student loans-meaning no credit review is required. Two types: Subsidized (no interested is charged until repayment) based on need.  Unsubsidized –Interest is accruing from the start of the loan while in school and is not based on need.

For both types the interest rate is fixed.  Repayment begins nine months after recipient ceased to be enrolled or is enrolled less than half-time.

Grad PLUS – available to graduate student only, 8.5% fixed rate, credit review is required.

The College of St. Joseph conducted a survey of lenders for the 2008-2009 school year to determine a suggested lender list.  Each lender’s responses were regarding organizational information as well as the products and services they provide to student and parents. If you wish to use another lender that is not on this list, you have the right to do so.  Borrower benefits subject to change.  Please visit the lenders website for current benefits.  All first-time Stafford loan borrowers must complete and submit a Lender Selection form.

Work Study

Based on need. Student employees receive a bi-weekly paycheck for hours worked.  During the academic year we recommend that students not work more than 20 hours per week.  Employment is not guaranteed.

Federal Work Study- funded by the Federal government, subject to availability of funds, student is paid directly for hours worked.

College Work Scholarship is funded by the institution, subject to availability of funds, and these wages are credited to the student’s account if an outstanding balance exists. 

Federal Stafford Loan Entrance Counseling

Federal regulations require that first time borrowers of Federal Stafford (subsidized and unsubsidized) and/or Federal Perkins Loans must complete entrance interview loan counseling before the proceeds of their loan can be released.

You may have the option of doing your Loan Entrance Counseling online with an organization called Mapping Your Future. You can find Entrance Counseling under "Site Menu."

Federal Loan Exit Counseling

Federal regulations require that borrowers of Federal Stafford (subsidized and unsubsidized) and/or Federal Perkins Loans must complete exit interview loan counseling before they leave the college.

Alternative Student Loans

Private loan in the students’ name.  Approval based on credit review.  Many times a co-signer is needed.  Contact the lender of choice to initiate this type of loan.  Alternative loans should only be used as a last resort after exploring all other financial aid options.
