Internationals

As part of the student community at the College of St. Joseph, you will be warmly welcomed and join a growing population of international students. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds including native Vermonters, students from the greater New England area, students from across the United States, and members from across the globe.

The College of St. Joseph is located in a wooded setting in the city of Rutland.  Located within three hours of Boston and Montreal and four hours from New York City, the population of Rutland, approximately 17000, makes it the second largest city in Vermont. Of particular interest to international students, Vermont is rated as one of the safest states in the U.S. The College offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in education, liberal arts, psychology & human services, and business. With a total enrollment just over 500 and its’ small size, the College offers a family-like environment with a student-centered approach to the individual that is generally not available at larger campuses. The College’s overall focus is to blend a combination of theory and practice in order to develop the student as a whole. While supported by quality academics, most students complete internships at CSJ to further develop their skills and to gain practical experience.

Small class size, individual attention, and a rural safe environment all typify the College of St. Joseph. Students can take advantage of a full range of athletics and student activities along with the outdoor recreational opportunities of Vermont including hiking, skiing, and snowboarding. Additional amenities include nearby shopping, arts opportunities, a major hospital, a small airport, and a train station.

We welcome international students on our campus. However, before we can process an application for admission, we must have proof international students will be able to meet the financial obligations of the College for the first year.

International applicants must submit evidence of graduation from a secondary school and are required to submit scores for English proficiency. This proficiency may be demonstrated in a number of ways:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Minimum TOEFL scores for Admission are 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based), or 79-80 on the iBT TOEFL test
  • A successful completion of Level 112 from the English Language Centers
  • IELTS band score of 6.0

An international applicant who meets the admission requirements of the College will be required to submit a deposit to cover expenses for one semester (room, board and tuition) by August 1st and proof that funds are available to cover expenses for the second semester prior to the issuance of the I-20 Form. This deposit will be held by the College in the student’s name and will be applied to the first year expenses. Failure to meet this requirement will result in cancellation of the student’s registration and immigration officials will be notified of such action.
