Sunrise Conference:
Maine-Fort Kent 68, College of St. Joseph 58
In Portland, Maine, the Fighting Saints trailed by as
many as 17 points in the second half and cut it back to
six, but a few missed shots cost them the comeback. Fort
Kent advanced to today's Sunrise Conference finals. CSJ
was led by conference player of the year Irene Tompkins
with 16 points and 11 rebounds as the Saints finished
14-11. "I thought it was a good year," said first-year
coach Jason Cassarino. "I told the kids I was proud of
them." Tahara Pleasure and Michelle Thompson had 13
points each and Erica Raiche 11 for the Saints, while
Ancilla Jeffers had 17 for Fort Kent.
At Friday night's banquet, Thompkins was named to the
all-conference first team with Thompson and CSJ's Vicki
Geutti was named to the second team. Rui Carmo and Rich
Ortega of CSJ were named to the men's first team.

In Randolph, Vermont Technical College cut the Saints
lead to six points early in the second half, then St.
Joseph's took the game over. The 14-10 (9-3 Sunrise
Conference) Saints pulled away with about 15 minutes
left to play. "It was close," College of St. Joseph
coach Jason Cassarino said. "We were cold early, than we
started hitting some shots. We started running. They got
a little tired. We wore them down." Tahara Pleasure
scored 20 points as four Saints hit double figures.
Irene Tompkins scored 14 points, Carrie Smith had 13 and
Vicky Guetti 12. Eliza Wakefield led Vermont Tech with
17 points. St. Joe's led at the half, 35-26. The Saints
travel to Portland, Maine, this weekend for the Sunrise
Conference Tournament. CSJ, the third seed, will play
UMaine-Fort Kent, the second seed.

College of St. Joseph 81, Fisher 29 (Saturday, February
16, 2008)
In Rutland, a trio of seniors paced College of St.
Joseph to a big win over Fisher College in their final
home game where they honored a quintet of seniors. Vicky
Guetti paced the Fighting Saints with 17 points and 14
rebounds. Seniors Erica Raiche added 14 points, while
senior Irene Tompkins chipped in 11 points and 14
rebounds. Freshman Carrie Smith added 10 points and all
10 players who dressed for CSJ contributed points.
Tiffany Beckman led Fisher with 10 points. The Saints
improved to 13-10, 8-3 in the Sunrise Conference, and
play their last regular-season game at VTC Tuesday, in
preparation of the Sunrise Tournament next weekend.

KANSAS CITY, Mo.
- Irene Tompkins of St. Joseph (Vt.) has been selected
as the NAIA Women's Basketball Division II Player of the
Week for the week ending Sunday, Feb. 3, 2008.
Tompkins, a senior forward from Schenectady, N.Y.,
averaged 22.0 points 14.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks in two
road wins for the Fighting Saints last week. She shot
76 percent from floor. Tompkins recorded two
double-doubles with 26 points and 16 rebounds against
SUNY at Canton and 18 points and 12 rebounds against
Paul Smiths. She also recorded her 1,000th career
point.

The College of St. Joseph’s Irene Tompkins
is leading the nation (NAIA, Division II) in rebounding,
snaring 14.40 caroms per game. She also ranks No. 1 in
offensive rebounds with an average of 6.5. Her teammate,
Vicki Guetti is ninth nationally in rebounding at 9.90
per game.
