Tuition Guarantee Plan Continued at College of St. Joseph

The Board of Trustees at the College of St. Joseph in Rutland, VT, has approved the continuation of the college’s Tuition Guarantee Plan, which was instituted last year as a way to help college-aged students who are facing the reality of increasing college costs in a challenging economic environment.

Census 2010 Is Coming!

Vermonters can be part of history by filling out their census questionnaires

Census 2010 is coming! The 2010 Census questionnaire will be delivered or mailed to households across Vermont in March. You can make history by filling out and returning it as soon as you receive it. Watch for your questionnaire! If you don’t return it, a census worker will have to visit your home to collect the information.

Rutland County Pro-Business Coalition at CSJ

On Monday, February 8th, about 100 people attended the Rutland County Pro-Business Coalition sponsored presentation titled “Vermont’s Fiscal Realities” at 6 p.m. at College of St. Joseph.

The presentation, which featured a three-person panel of state officials, was intended as an opportunity for citizens to learn the “facts and the fiscal liabilities from the people that administer the laws passed by our elected representatives,” according to Jim Eckhardt of the RCPBC.

Vermont Foster Youth Program Receives Grant

College of St. Joseph is excited to announce it has received a $50,000 grant from Community Funds, Inc.–The John Merck Fund to assist with the College’s STEPS (Students Taking an Effective Path to Success) program. STEPS is a unique program designed specifically to meet the needs of Vermont foster youth transitioning to college.

Haitian Earthquake Relief Dinner

College of St. Joseph will be putting on a reservations only, fine dining experience to assist with Haitian earthquake relief. 100% of funds raised will go directly to St. Damian’s Hospital in Haiti to help care for the many thousands in need of medical care.

Alumni Phone-A-Thon Success

Fighting Saints Win In Double Overtime

College of Saint Joseph charged back from a 14-point deficit in the final six minutes of regulation and beat rival Green Mountain College 87-82 in double overtime at CSJ Athletic Center. Doug Childs’ seven points in the second overtime was the beacon that capped a stirring comeback by the Fighting Saints who trailed most of the game and looked less than impressive for 34 minutes.

The Harlem Superstars visited the College of St. Joseph and took on the Fighting Saints’ men’s basketball team to an appreciative mix of nearly 400 fans – from young to old, students and community members as well. Juettner tapped to rebuild CSJ women’s soccer program

Andrew Juettner had a winning touch as the Mount St. Joseph Academy girls varsity soccer coach. His Mounties went 44-33-2 during his tenure from 2001-2005 with two state semifinal appearances and now he will try to bring that winning formula to College of St. Joseph’s women’s soccer program.

STEPS Challenge Grant Received from the J. Warren and Lois McClure Foundation

CSJ Sends Off Class of ‘09

It’s not often that a college class is treated to an academically themed life lesson worthy of a lecture hall on their graduation day. But that’s exactly what the 103-member class of 2009 received Sunday at College of St. Joseph in Rutland. The black-robed graduates and hundreds of friends and relatives filled the college gymnasium for the 50th graduation ceremony of its kind at the Catholic institution.

Rich Ortega, CSJ Basketball Standout, Playing in Israel

Ortega grew up playing basketball on the playgrounds of New York City. It was a game he fell in love with at an early age, but a game plenty thought he could not play. The guy who looked too much like a football player has played professional basketball in the Dominican Republic where he was MVP of an all-star game and is now piling up the points while getting paid to play in Israel.

Mark J. Gagnon Appointed Director of Counseling Services

Mark J. Gagnon has been appointed as the Director of Counseling Services at the College of St. Joseph beginning April 13, 2009. He graduated from Castleton State College in 2006 with a Bachelor of Social Work and completed his Master of Social Work with a concentration in clinical social work from SUNY Albany.

Maria Velarde Grau Bove Returns to CSJ

Maria Velarde Grau Bove Ed. D. has returned to College of St. Joseph after many years to lead its Education Division as Chairperson. Her appointment will begin July 1, 2009. Dr. Bove has had extensive international and national experience in education and is known for her expertise in inclusive education and educational leadership.

American Red Cross holds Spring Blood Drive at CSJ

A blood drive is scheduled for Tuesday, April 21st when the Red Cross visits the College of St. Joseph Gym in Rutland, VT. Donor hours will be from 12 – 6 pm and anyone who is at least 17 years old and weighs at least 110 lbs. may be eligible to donate.

Commencement Speaker: World Renowned Scholar and Educational Innovator

The speaker for the CSJ’s fiftieth commencement on May 10, 2009 will be Dr. John Bremer. Dr. Bremer is a well known and highly regarded educator and prolific writer on various aspects of social and educational philosophy and practice. He has higher degrees from the University of Cambridge, Pembroke College, the University of Leicester, and St. John’s College and in fields as diverse as history, education, adult education, mathematical astronomy and philosophy and administration.

Foster Care Program receives Connecticut Foundation grant

The Hilda & Preston Davis Foundation of Greenwich, CT has awarded a $20,000 grant to College of St. Joseph to support its STEPS program (Students Taking an Effective Path toward Success). CSJ launched the STEPS program last fall to help youth in Vermont State custody transition to higher education and, presently, six young Vermonters have entered the college through this program. The program will provide these students with year-round room and board, enhanced financial aid, and an array of counseling services geared toward supporting student success.

Vermont Campus Compact Honors CSJ Student

Vermont Campus Compact has awarded a 2009 Commitment to Service and Engagement Award to College of St. Joseph junior, Kayla Billings, for her outstanding work in community involvement. Kayla has been a major asset to our community, and is an excellent example of the ideal leader on the College of St. Joseph campus in the areas of service and engagement.
