Phil Bartlett has been named the Athletic Director, Head Athletic Recruiter, and Head Men’s Basketball Coach at the College of St. Joseph.   No stranger to Rutland area basketball, Bartlett comes to CSJ after five years as the Head Coach at West Rutland (VT) High School.  While at West Rutland, Bartlett’s teams had a record of 95-23 and appeared in four Vermont state title games.  Prior to his time at West Rutland, Bartlett spent eight years as an assistant coach at Rutland (VT) High School and two years as an assistant coach at Mount Saint Joseph (VT) Academy. Bartlett’s teams are known for their aggressive defense and team chemistry.

Coach Bartlett eats, sleeps, and lives basketball. Take one look in his office and the story tells itself.  Pictures of former players wrap around the walls, team slogans fill the bulletin boards, recruiting information is piled on his desk, and game films are on his computer.  The list could go on and on. One of the most notable decorations is a map of the United States with pins throughout.  A pin is placed in the hometown of each of his players, from Alaska to West Rutland, VT.

One of Bartlett’s main strengths is his accessibility.  From six in the morning until well after midnight, a player or fan can find him in his office at the CSJ athletic center.  If he is not recruiting for the upcoming season, fundraising, or watching tape on an upcoming opponent, he is doing something to help his players, or the CSJ basketball program as a whole.  From washing uniforms, to sweeping the floor and setting up camera equipment, Coach Bartlett does everything in order to make the program run smoothly.  There is no greater role model for a young man or woman than the coach in their life.  Bartlett places himself second and his players first.  He sacrifices personally so his team can have what others do not.  His players feed off this positive energy, and in turn serve their community and college with pride.
