College of St. Joseph will introduce a social media certificate program and concentration in the fall 2014 semester. The program will provide in-demand Web skills, such as web marketing, social media communication, online community management, Web analytics, and content management for the Web.

Job listings increasingly show a demand for Web and social media skills. In both the concentration and certificate program students will learn how to tell a story, share the story online, and interpret its success. Students will have the opportunity to complete coursework in areas of interest that are relevant to their career, business or degree program.

The certificate program is a great fit for small business owners, employers that wish to train staff, nonprofits and job-seekers who wish to add Web skills to their toolbox. The social media concentration can be combined with any of the undergraduate majors offered at CSJ.

The concentration is for matriculated CSJ students and consists of 15 credits, while the four-course certificate is offered to students who are not currently in a degree program.

CSJ is offering the four courses to complete the certificate at a total cost of $1,000. Those courses are writing for the Web, social media communications, statistics, and Web-based marketing and advertising. The certificate can be completed within one year.

As part of the program, CSJ will introduce two new courses during the 2014-15 academic year, Writing for the Web in fall 2014 and social media communications in spring 2015. Writing for the Web provides students with a solid introductory knowledge of content creation techniques, identifying the needs of an audience, and managing content for the Web and social media channels.  Social Media Communications examines how social media has changed the way people interact and the expectations of consumers and advertisers.
