GPS560A.1 Protecting Youth in Cyberspace (7/06 – 7/10)
One-Week Course
3 credits MTWRF 8:00am – 5:00pm Robb, D
Have you noticed a decrease in children’s social skills? Do you know how to use Facebook, Myspace, or other sites that children use to develop their relationships? Have you ever seen a group of children, each on their cell phone and apparently ignoring each other? Parents, educators, and psychologists are concerned about the impact of the internet and other technological devices on the social skills and psychological well-being of our children. While technology is certainly an educational and social tool that is here to stay, are some children losing the savvy, skills and patience to conduct social relations in the physical world? This course will provide a “Hands On” opportunity to experience technology as our children use it. Students will visit Facebook, Myspace and other popular sites. Students will also learn about text messaging. Topics covered will include: habits and characteristics that may indicate overuse, the impact of the computer and cell phone on social relationships and the computer as a social skills agent. $20 lab fee. 3 credits.
