College of St. Joseph has named Sergio Lopes as January’s Student of the Month. The junior sports management major was recognized for his dedication to the CSJ community, academic success, and engagement in the Rutland community as a member of the Provider Program.
Lopes, a native of Pawtucket, R.I., chose to attend CSJ due to its affordability.
“The affordable tuition was the main cause, but I also had a significant number of friends that came here or were about to, so I wanted to joined them on this journey,” he said.
While the rural environment was a big change for Lopes, CSJ’s small size has made him feel more at home.
“We know everybody around here due to the small size,” he said.
Lopes is a three year member of the men’s soccer team and served as captain during the fall 2016 season, helping lead his team to its second straight national tournament appearance. He is also a member of the Blue & White Honor Society, which is for students who excel academically.
As a member of the Provider Program, he has completed community services projects involving food and farming, as well as participating in fun game nights with the elderly and people with disabilities.
“The Provider Program is a good program because it gets us engaged with each other and the community,” he said.
He attributes his success to instructors and staff willingness to go the extra mile for those who want it.
“The key to my success has been the good use of resources available, and the help that is provided to whoever wants to succeed here,” he said.
